Vintage Verses

Initially, I created ‘Vintage Verses’ mini collection really for myself and my loved ones. I need to be reminded of God’s goodness every single day. In a visual and beautiful way. I wanted to create something I would love and have with me. I needed the product, already wonderful, to shine, and my art to complement it. So simplicity was important.

I also wanted it to be aesthetically cohesive. I turned to my obsession for vintage ephemera, and prayed on it. (see my film/reel on Instagram). I started reading verses that jumped out at me. Then, researching further, I realised the rest was simply being and being led by the Holy Spirit.

What I gained is a deeper revelation of God’s amazing Grace, and His love demonstrated on the Cross. I am also wrecked by the love of Christ, and the power He had when He chose the Cross. He is the Son, our God, and our friend. How could we not fall in love over and again with Jesus?

Below my revelations. Please feel free to share them with those who may want a fresh revelation of God’s love through Christ.

‘Vintage Verses’ Reflection and Revelation

The Oriental Poppy (Papaver Somniferum)

Jesus was offered sour wine (vinegar) when He first went on the cross. He took a taste and then rejected drinking it. (Matthew 27:34) The sour wine had gall, which is a kind of sleep-narcotic, mixed into it. This gall was likely derived from the Oriental Poppy, and was then mixed into the wine possibly to make crucifixion more humane.

After being crucified, Jesus said ‘I am thirsty’. And this time, He took the same sour wine and drank it. Then He said ‘It is finished.’ (John 19:30) This brought tears to my eyes as I meditated on why He rejected it, then drank it in the end. I felt immense love with the holy conviction that Jesus did not want to be spared any ounce of pain. All of it, needed to be experienced, the humiliation, the physical torture, the pain, so that we need not experience them. He redeemed us fully, not just in our spiritual connection with our Father God, but all of sickness, humiliation and pain as well. Only when it was finished, then He drank it.

The Oriental Poppy was described to be lavender in colour.

Crocus (Colchicum Autumnale)

The Joy of Redemption (Isaiah 35:2). In the driest of climates, the crocus can burst forth with joy and flourish. Christ redeemed everyone of us from our pain and transgressions, that we have true freedom today. Like the parched earth, our limited lives have now gained purpose, and are only beginning to grasp His amazing love for us. He is the reason why we are filled with joy, and why we can celebrate our every day.

Mustard Flowers (Brassica)

This verse deeply encourages anyone who is struggling with the concept of Faith. Jesus says it so simply, that even those with the slightest amount of faith - the size of a mustard seed, will move mountains. ‘Nothing will be impossible for you’. (Matthew 17:20)

It is intimately addressed, and doubly-negated to stress how mighty is our God, and how much He loves us that we can accomplish anything in Him. Matthew 13:32 reads that this seed becomes a tall tree and birds come to rest on its branches. Not only will this little seed of faith grow, but that it will flourish, so much that other life will thrive from it.
